Talkeetna, Alaska
This next stop cheered me up. Talkeetna is to Denali what Homer is to the Kenai Peninsula: a cute little town with a hip art scene. It’s off the main highway a few miles but it is worth the time to check it out. The weather had improved enough that I took out my camera and my trusty tilt-shift lens so I could create more of those blurry-looking images that have been popping up all over my Alaska galleries…
We parked next to the railroad tracks so this was the first thing that The Boy and I explored. I brought my camera and he brought his new gun. Yes, we let our child play with guns…bubble guns.
We followed the tracks to a railroad bridge that crossed over the Talkeetna River. It had a convenient pedestrian walkway that pre-empted any ill-advised thoughts of walking out onto the railroad bridge itself.
Eventually, Mimi and The Mom caught up with us and we all headed into town. Dad was already there checking things out.
As we wandered around Talkeetna, The Boy began experimenting with the effect of wind currents on bubbles. Although he tried to be nonchalant about it, he began to fire off rounds of bubbles in places where he believed the air currents would carry them into groups of unsuspecting passers by. Fortunately for The Parents, he didn’t quite have the hang of it – at least at first. He did eventually hone his skills, at which point The Dad had to put a stop to these unprovoked bubble assaults.
After a few hours in Talkeetna it was time to head down the road to Anchorage. The Boy decided to make the trip with Mimi and Papa T, leaving his parents to fend for themselves.
