Morning in Gothic Valley
Gothic Valley, Colorado - July 2009Crested Butte is known as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. Gothic Valley, immediately to the north, is where to find them. This was our next stop.
We arrived in the valley just as it was getting dark – far too late to find an open spot at the valley’s one tiny campground. We ended up parking alongside the rough gravel road that runs the length of the valley and sleeping there. No big deal since this road wasn’t exactly busy.
The only downside to our ad hoc campsite was the twenty-or-so moths that invaded our domicile as Darla made dinner. I’m still not sure where they came from; there were no moths fluttering around our outside lights. Had they stowed away on the bottom of the slide when we left Maroon Bells? We never did figure this out. Regardless, the sight of The Dad chasing twenty moths around the camper while The Mom tried to cook dinner sent a certain tired Boy into fits of laughter, which then sent The Parents into fits of laughter.
I was up at dawn the following morning to walk a well-known wildflower trail – at least that was my plan. I never actually made it to the trail due to the necessity of crossing a large, cold stream in order to reach it. Instead, I returned to the camper, rousted Darla and Lewis, and we all embarked on an early morning driving tour of the valley.

Crested Butte, Colorado - July 2009Crested Butte was the most laid-back of the resort communities we had visited so far. Unlike Vail (which we very much enjoyed), it felt like a place people actually lived. Unlike Aspen, it felt like a place people could actually afford to live.
