Exploring Colorado’s iconic ski resort towns was a big part of our early itinerary. We wanted to get a sense of these famous places. Vail was up first.

Summer is understandably the low season for these communities so many of them sponsor festivals and other events to attract visitors during the warmest months of the year. Vail has a summer music festival which features evening concerts as well as free performances, like this one, throughout the day.

This performer, a cellist from the visiting Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, was supposed to be performing a children’s concert. The only problem: no children. OK, I exaggerate; there were two children – if you count a certain sleeping Boy. Nevertheless, it was an interesting performance that was enjoyed by the handful of adults that happened to be in the area at the time.

The setting for this event was the gorgeous Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, a public garden with wildflowers of every color, shape, and size. We were beginning to appreciate just how synonymous wildflowers were with summer in Colorado.

Lewis’ interest was soon drawn to the brightly colored whirligigs in the Children’s Garden.

Never let it be said that The Boy doesn’t appreciate the finer things in life. Lewis had wrapped himself in fur before The Parents even knew what was happening. “Yes, I’m sure it is soft, Little Man. Now step away from the two-thousand dollar coat…”

    Where to Next?
    Vail, Colorado - July 2009

Many of Colorado’s resort communities evolved out of old mining towns. Not Vail. It was created from nothing. Vail reminded me a little of Banff, albeit in a setting that is not nearly as spectacular as the Canadian Rockies that surround the latter.

It is easy to guess what Lewis’ favorite Vail experience turned out to be. This group of three small fountains proved to be the perfect diversion on a hot summer afternoon.
