Palisade Falls is an 80 foot waterfall that cascades down a canyon wall formed from hexagonal basalt columns. Located up Hyalite Canyon in the Gallatin National Forest, it is not far from Bozeman, Montana. This falls or one near it was featured in an episode of Peter Lik's From the Edge.

I should mention that I left my DSLR and lenses in the camper in favor of a new iPhone 4. I was thrilled with the convenience of carrying a phone that was also a camera as well as a photographic multi-tool. Of course, no phone is going to completely take the place of a real camera and, as time has passed, I've become less enamored with it as a camera. This shot was taken with the low res front-facing camera. The quality is...less than optimal.

Getting my hands on an iPhone 4 required a long wait but the wait was worth it—not so much for the phone or camera but for the apps that provide topo maps, geodata, moon phase calendars, tide tables, sunrise and sunset times (and not just times but directional information as well), all at the touch of a finger. I can point my iPhone at the top of the basalt cliff in this image and it will tell me when and where the sun will peek out over it in the morning. It's hard to imagine a more versatile photographic tool than this one with the right apps installed on it.
