Cape Arago, Oregon – August 2010

There is lots to see on Cape Arago, from the largest haul-out of Stellar sea lions on the Oregon coast, to Shore Acres, the lush former estate of lumber and ship-building magnate Louis Simpson. On this particular evening, it was too foggy to see the sea lions offshore – we could sure hear them; Shore Acres was closed; and it was getting dark. Still, there was time to take a short walk and tell Lewis about the first time he visited this park. He wasn’t quite two at that time; and he made quite an impression on other visitors as he kicked around an empty two liter Coke bottle in the grass at the top of the cape.

We stood here for some time enjoying this view. I really wanted to find a way down onto those rocks but it was protected sea lion habitat and thus off limits. Darla spent this time looking for sea lions swimming around in the ocean. She spotted a few of them – or so she said. Lewis and I were never able to see any but it made sense that they would be out there. On the other hand, Darla wanted to see them really bad... :)

Cape Arago, Oregon – August 2010

We were on our way down from the top of the cape when I spotted a trail that could have descended to the area I had assumed was off limits. I decided to take a quick look while Darla and Lewis waited in the truck. The trail did not lead to where I had hoped; however, it did lead me to this nice view of two fishing boats floating silently on a calm ocean. I’d left my DSLR in the truck but I had my iPhone 4 with me. Not bad for a camera phone in low light.
