Trailhead
Drift Creek Wilderness, Oregon – August 2010The Photographers Guide to the Oregon Coast, by David Middleton and Rod Barbee, was our primary guide when determining where to stop and when to keep going. It proved to be an excellent choice. At less than $12, I would recommend it to anyone planning a visit to the Oregon coast. Having said that, this is one hike that required a little more of a description.
The hike takes you into a beautiful and rare stand of old growth timber – never logged, ever! The landscape is lush and the trees are huge. The trick is getting here. Windy roads lead you to even narrower windy roads, to windy dirt roads, to windy one-lane dirt roads. The last mile to the trailhead has been blocked by the Forest Service forcing hikers to walk a mile (maybe more) just to get to the trailhead you see here. This grassy expanse used to be the parking area from what I could tell.
The Boy and His Favorite Parent
Drift Creek Wilderness, Oregon – August 2010Lewis is smiling but he would have turned around right here if we would have let him. Everything was soaking wet. Giant drops were falling from the tree canopy above us. He saw no point in walking any further. I didn’t tell him but I was glad everything was soaking wet. It seemed appropriate.
Let’s Take a Family Photo
Drift Creek Wilderness, Oregon – August 2010Darla decided this would be a good spot for a family photo. Lewis immediately shifted into his angry dog personna. Chaos ensued. In other words, we took a family photo...
