At 93 feet high, the Yaquina Head lighthouse is Oregon's tallest. This was the first Oregon lighthouse I ever visited and it remains one of my favorites. Newly restored, it is now part of Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area which includes an interpretive center, an expansive tide pool exhibit at Quarry Cove, a commanding view of the seabird refuge on Colony Rock, and several trails leading to viewpoints of the coastline.

When dealing with a backlit subject, it is possible to create an additional element of interest, a sunburst, by lining up the sun with the edge of your subject and shooting at a small aperture – in this case f/22. This is an old trick but I’ve only recently started experimenting with it.

  • Sunset from Devils Punch Bowl

    Sunset from Devils Punch Bowl
Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area, Oregon – August 2010

We arrived at Devils Punch Bowl around 7:50 pm, anxious not to catch the view before sunset but to get our order in at Mo’s Seafood before they closed at 8:00. As is often the case, the wind was blowing like crazy here – harder than at any other place on our trip – and it was freezing cold as a result. All the better to enjoy Mo’s hot clam chowder. As is our custom, we ordered far more food than we could eat for dinner and then sat inside the camper enjoying this sunset as we chowed down.

I did step outside to grab the two sunset shots. After grabbing the first shot, I turned to go back to the camper. Then I heard the sound of a helicopter in the distance. I could see it was the Coast Guard and I was already envisioning a silhouette of the heli against the setting sun. Unfortunately, the helicopter took so long to arrive at the sun’s azimuth that they were no longer at the same altitude. No worries. I had a bowl of Mo’s hot clam chowder waiting for me in the camper. No time to dwell on life's errata.
